Journalist Rita Cosby is of positive opinion regarding the state of journalism today. She should know. A veteran of the cable networks she has had stops at both Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. These networks representing, to many, both sides of the American political spectrum. Ms. Cosby also hosts “The Rita Cosby Show,” on 77/WABC, and does frequent hosting and reporting for both CNN, and HLN. She also is a special correspondent for the syndicated news magazine “Inside Edition.”
Catching up with her at the Russell Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, NoViewNews briefly asked Ms. Cosby on her take of opinion media today. She noted that it is reflective of the state of time we are in now. It mirrors the tenor of the American public today, and does not drive opinion. People are savvy, and they know where it’s coming from. Her point is that consumers of media today do not lose sight of the nuance in news delivery. It is her belief that news networks of cable make it clear from what point of view they are coming from, and the viewers both get, and accept it.
In an era where reporters, at least nationally, are under siege for credibility, the veteran journalist/author is adamant in her defense of the profession. She cites the competence of day to day reporters covering affairs of state across the board. The lines are not blurred. The reporting factual, solid. The word “context” is key. If you have a noted right, or left, media source, well, that’s what you are going to get. The angle is what these networks cover, and how the frame it. The information remains the star.
The eruption of opinion journalism does not have to be all bad, she intones. It is where we are, and who we are. Much of the public prefers their information from sources, they feel, reflect their thoughts and views. It is fine. Ms. Cosby believes in the intelligence of the viewing, listening public to discern the nuance, context, of national news reporting.
